A shadow of its former self – Past Squares 8

…but still rather imposing. The ancient theatre of Taormina on Sicily. initially a place for classical theatre, it grew into an ampitheatre for hosting combat events between men an wild beasts.

From the theatre seats there is an imposing view of Mount Etna….a fantastic backdrop for this venue (but sadly I didn’t get it in my image)

  1. Now that is what I call a beautiful shot, Sue! Have a good day!

  2. So evocative, it’s easy to imagine the spectacles that must have been staged there.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  3. What a magnificent structure – and what a history it must have. Great photo.

  4. A beauty, and a great view too. It’s very popular in the summer for its classical theatre performances.
It’s on my list for my next rip to Sicily!

  5. Glad you’ve reminded me of this impressive sight. We were there many many years ago but the slides are old and hidden in a cupboard. I love your photo of it 😍

  6. Crikey have to be an amazing performance for me not to be distracted by the view!

  7. I guess it’s only a shadow of its former glory ;D 😀 Terrific photo Sue 😀

  8. Taormina is a lovely place, if a tad overcrowded with tourists (of which I was one). We didn’t go into the amphitheatre but could see it from outside. Yours is a lovely photo.

  9. Great image, you’ve got so much detail here. I never tire of the Greek theatre in Taormina and I could sit there all day just looking and imagining the past. I always hoped to see the volcano erupting as I looked across at Etna but it never did although I always managed to get the iconic peak in the photograph.

  10. “Don’t put your daughter on that stage!” But I really, really want to!! 🤩
