Lens Artist’s Challenge # 198: Light and Shadow

This week, Patti has us exploring the interplay of light and shadow, and using them to take or photography to another level.

These images are all going to be a bit mixed up, in my attempt to show how I use light and shadow, for example in creating mood, definition, depth, isolation.

I love moving from shadow to light to emphasise the elements I want to emphasise, as here:

Your Shadow at Morning

…and here:

Here, we have the flowers illuminated by sunlight, sharp against the shadows behind:

Here, the shadows create a pattern and pick out the contours of the ground:

Path in the shadows

Here I have used light and shadow here to create depth, and the shadows also emphasise the sombre mood:

In this image, I was struck by how the shadows emphasised structure (when the sun was in a different direction, this scene looked very flat):

  1. All good choices, but your ‘tunnel shots’ are always admirable, Sue.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Wonderful selection. Your opener is absolutely brilliant.

  3. Great selections. I love the jumble of rocks in that last one. Excellent.

  4. The first two shots echo my approach to the challenge so naturally I’m going to pick those out as favourites 😉 I love the back-lit tulips too and the final shot really makes your point well as I can imagine how much less interesting it would be with flatter lighting!

  5. I love your collection, Sue. That first image is a stunner. What a great mood it creates.

  6. The shot of the long morning shadows as the two men enter into the light is so dramatic!
