It’s time again for Frizztext’s A to Z Challenge, this week it’s V. From my travels, V could be for Valle Crucis, Vienna, Virginia Water, Viskri, Viterbo, Vorarlberg …..
But I am going for Voronet….more specifically, the Painted Monastery of Voronet in the region of Bucovina, Romania. Built in 1488, it has the most extraordinary frescoes on it’s exterior walls. The blue is derived from lapis lazuli. More about Voronet here and here.
See more takes on ‘V’ here.
More ‘V’ here.
So beautiful!!
Thank you! It is an amazing place….
Lovely architecture, and the artwork is stunning. 🙂
It is quite a place, as are other painted monasteries in the region. Well worth the visit
Beautiful frescoes!
They certainly are, Angeline 🙂
You have visited some extraordinary out-of-the-way places Sue. This is marvellous!
I have always enjoyed searching out off the beaten track places….frequently the catalyst has been a book or newspaper/magazine article I have read….went to Cuba as a result of a newspaper article, Romania after reading Elizabeth Luard’s ‘Still life’ and Patrick Leigh Fermor’s ‘Between the Woods and the Water’!!
great wall paintings with an unbelievable blue! I hope no suburban graffiti sprayers once will find this treasure inspired to make some signs – but maybe they would learn how to paint better?
I hope nobody ever defaces these treasures ….
That looks amazing Sue! Pushing Romania up on my list 🙂
You should ……Wooden Churches in Maramures, painted monasteries in Bucovina, fortified Saxon Churches and castles in Transylvania, the Carpathian Mountains and stunning scenery…
Ahh Frizztext i wonder where he is.
Yes, so do I….
