Bonus black and grey

Seen in Costa Rica, he looked black to me, but I was told he is a blue heron…..oh dear….

Blue heron

But this one in the UK is definitely grey

Now for a definite bit of black, a coot:

  1. Good choices, Sue. The poor Coot has no idea he spawned an insult. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Fantastic bird photographs

  3. I have never seen baby coots before, aren’t they just fabulous! And I think the Blue Heron is definitely blue-black.

  4. Never seen baby coots before. Cheers, Sue!

  5. Love the black (& blue) heron – we have great blue herons here in Vancouver but I have always found them distinctly grey, until one day I took some photos of one with distinctly blue markings. So now I’m not sure if there are two different types or whether the colour only shows up in the appropriate lighting. Capturing a Coot (with chicks!) is quite the feat – I have only managed to capture their backends as they swim away from me as fast as possible…

  6. The baby coots are so ugly that they’re cute. 🙂 I’ve seen lots of big ones here but never babies.

  7. Aw, the Coot is so cute. And I know what you mean by bird names – over here, our very grey-looking heron is called the Great blue heron. OK, there’s a slight bluish cast to the bird’s grey feathers but it’s awfully similar to your Grey heron. What’s in a name? 😉

  8. I’ve never seen a blue heron this dark. 😍

  9. For a bird that isn’t fond of flying it is surprising that they seem to be happy in Australia as well as the rest of the world. The red fluffy chicks were a great catch.
