Jude is asking us if we have any terracotta images for this week’s life in colour (orange this month)
So, lets show some from Watt’s chapel in Compton, Surrey. This is the carving on the exterior of the Cemetery Chapel. The carving was done by Mary Watts, the wife of the Victorian artist George Watts, and local villagers.
The terracotta gives a wonderful warm glow:

Terrific example of carved terracotta.
Thanks, Mari! It is a rather marvellous sight
This is absolutely splendid. Takes decorative terracotta to a whole new level.
Well, it took my breath away the first time I saw it, Tish!
I can believe that.
Wow, what artistry!
Gorgeous
Pleasure¡
That’s beautiful, Sue. Such talented work.
Best wishes, Pete.
Talented indeed
Glad you featured this wonderful place. I still need to go back and find the eagle frieze that I missed!
And will you ever get there?
Should do!
Well, we’ll have to meet, somehow!
WOW. That’s more than a bit of terra cotta. Wonderful photos.
It’s a wonderful place
You definitely win the prize* for terracotta!
*Disclaimer. Prize is imaginary only.
Tee hee!!
Wonderful details!
It is quite something
This is really different. Is it carved or moulded?
Oh, goodness, carved. By Mary Watts and the local villagers in towhee late 19th century. The chapel is a Grade I listed Arts and Crafts masterpiece.
I actually didn’t realise terracotta could be carved!
Well, it is clay!
Exactly. That’s why I thought it was unusual. It’s so friable.
OK!
Beautiful! I like the stylized designs and as you said, that warm glow from the terra cotta.
It is the most amazing place, and not so very far from me
