On holiday, I have always preferred the road less travelled, unless there is a pressing need to get somewhere more rapidly
Here are a few examples of back roads travelled in the past – click on any image to access the relevant gallery.
Wine routes in France and Austria were always popular, and there might be stunning scenery (as with the Dentelles de Montmirail in the Rhône valley) or castles as at Durnstein in Austria, or one of many in Alsace:

Nothing like getting off the beaten track, discovering your road has been closed, and taking a very rough detour because you were determined to reach your destination…my friend was driving and I suggested she take this very rough detour, and talked her through negotiating the ruts and potholes…in 1st gear and VERY slowly! That’s how we reached Craco Veccia, to explore the abandoned town.

And off the main roads, there’s nothing like a tree lined avenue

Glorious scenery, Sue! Love those peaks in Dentelles and Craco Vecchia is always a winner.
Thanks, Jo! We had an eventful trip in the Dentelles, got onto a rough track used by the vineyard labourers and I had to drive very cautiously!! Socking great drops on the passenger side…..
🤮💕💕

Oh, I still have postcards to find for Lens artists #159, Ana!
Oh Sue, I’m sorry for the mistake or… maybe I wanted to put some pressure on you… I’m sure you’re preparing a great post with postcards. 😘
Oh, put some pressure on, Ana!
oh so do I, and you have found some marvellous ones here.
Plenty more in the archives, and in the memory!
🙂
😊
That last one could have been taken here, close to Beetley. We have a lot of ‘roads less travelled’ nearby.
Best wishes, Pete.
Oh, fantastic! But less so in the dark, in winter….
Beautiful back roads Sue – you could have “double-dipped” as most all of these would also make lovely postcard!
I have other ideas!
Thank you for joining the back country roads challenge with these lovely images!
My pleasure!
We even have books about back roads in New England. We love the out of the way. Fortunately in Connecticut it is hard to get lost.
I had a book on back road France, years ago
I suppose by now some of them have become major roads.
Possibly
