Jude says “Take a photo of a subject that you like in colour and then convert to Black & White. Show both images for comparison. Which is best? Does the image rely on colour for impact.”
I’m going to show two here, neither of which benefits from the monochrome conversion.
This first one is all about the brash colour:
And this one loses its delicateness, it’s femininity by the monochrome treatment:

Sue, I agree that both of these and, I would suspect, most street art need color in order to shine.

Thanks, Janet! Occasionally there will be enough geometry and texture to do mono, but yes most of the time it needs colour
Very clearly shot for colour 🙂
Yay! Another tick in the box!
Actually I like the first one in B&W. It’s definitely the bike!
Well, the mono certainly brings the bike to the fore!
True.
ooh you must be influencing my photographic eye as that’s what I was thinking!
😊
You’re right of course; both are quite powerful shots in colour and lose that in b&w.
Thanks, Su…but see Jude’s thought
Hm. Not sure I agree. Love how there can be so many perspectives on an image.
Indeed, we as the photographer take the image, hoping to evoke a response from the viewer….but it may not necessarily be what we are expecting!
I agree with those thoughts. If you want the bike to be the focus, b/w is the way forward.
Indeed
I agree completely. The colour ones are superior in every way.
Best wishes, Pete.
Well, all votes for colour so far!
i prefer the colour versions but the top one is still very striking in black and white.
Thank you!
Agree with all the above comments Sue 🙂
Thanks, Brian!
Going to buck the trend and say I like the b&w better. In the first pair, as Jude notes, b&w makes the bike the focus. In the colour version, the bike is a distraction, so neither it nor the art stand out. In the second pair, the lamp becomes more prominent and I prefer the art in b&w. That’s subjective though, because I don’t much l8ke the colour scheme.
Well, very good, I like it when someone lifts their head over the parapet!!
agree with you on how they work in B&W, there is something about them both that works well.
Hmmmm, we all have our thoughts on this, which is good
😊
It’s great when a post stimulates so much feedback. Much better than ‘nice photo’ or ‘beautiful’ even if they are.
Yep, totally agree, Jude!
