In another world….I was trying to find an old post I did on some ruins in Virginia Water, and even had fellow bloggger Margaret on the fruitless search….I must have imagined posting
After all, it is a decade ago that I was wandering around these ruins….and I wasn’t blogging then. These stones from Leptis Magna were effectively plundered by the British in 1816 for a display in the British Museum. But the Museum declined to have them and they ended up in Windsor Great Park.
So come for a wander about these amazing ruins, a little piece of Leptis Magna from the arid desert now in leafy Surrey.
The view from above, close to the A30:
Wandering around, firstly on a January day, the remains of some snow being a far cry from hot desert sand:
Moving a bit further along, out of the sun
This was one of my favourite parts, but all fenced off so I couldn’t explore inside:
And I took an image of this area in winter, then the last image is in the April sunshine
It’s a shame they were plundered, but what an opportunity to see them standing here as they might have once been in their original location. At least they weren’t destroyed. I do love history and seeing this sort of thing so thanks for adding to my morning pleasure.

Thanks, Janet! I, too, love a bit of history
I had heard about those, but have never seen them. Thanks for rectifying that, Sue.
Best wishes, Pete.
Pleased to be of assistance, Pete!
Whenever I visited the UK, I enjoyed seeing the remnants of the Roman foot print. One day, Hadrian’s Wall! I always wanted to hike it. 🙂
Yes, like you Hadrians Wall was on the list , but I never did it while I could have done…
These are beautiful, Sue. You did a great job of capturing them.
Thank you, Pat….I enjoyed revisiting these images from a decade ago
Extraordinary, to see these in leafy Surrey. Such plundering is pretty unforgivable of course, but having been done, at least it gives us a flavour of the life and times came from. And next time I look for Leptis Magna on your blog … I’ll find it
Indeed you will….sorry about the wild goose chase…
😉
🤭
Gorgeous ruins…sorry about plundering though.
There has been much plundering through history….
There still is..

I know, A C and I have tried to persuade her…
Interesting history of time long gone. Zoom chatting has certainly taken off in Covid times
Zoom chatting has been brilliant for me, Pauline
