A comment from Becky this morning had me reminiscing….about those moments, however brief, when you come across something that strikes a chord, sticks in the mind…..
Yesterday, it was the Berlin Wall in the early 2000s (apologies for showing this again) and before that when we visited in the early 90s, and Checkpoint Charlie still looked like, well, Checkpoint Charlie….I need to hunt out some more images.
The other day Drake was talking of wartime relics in the forests of Alsace and I got to thinking of an unrestored Maginot fort that I saw… a memory that is firmly fixed in my mind

Maginot fort men’s entrance
Some moments I have no photographs of, but if my memory is jogged, they will return…like the long line of slow, underpowered Trabants struggling up an incline on the Nürnberg to Wurzburg stretch of Autobahn in the first week of November 1989…..
And I regret not keeping the Solidarność leaflet I was handed on the train from Vienna in early 1982….unrepeatable moments of history experienced….
I may have to create a series of Singular Moments….or maybe not
I’ve been re-reading Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, and this reminds me of one of his lines, “Sometimes even a single day can change the course of a whole lifetime.”
Hmmm, yes!
Reminds me of the bunkers and gun emplacements in Normandy and not far from where my s-i-l lives. Good reminders, I think, and fascinating bits of history.

Oh, completely…out of place, out of time
Singular moments. Yes, please do. It’ll get everyone’s memory-machines whirring…..
Love your comment, Margaret! Well, I might….
Do start that Singular Moments series, it sounds so interesting. Sometimes we experience historical moments and we have no idea, not until decades go by….
Thanks, Ana, I need to give it some thought!!
My memory machine needs a good whirr, Sue 🙂 🙂
That’s the only bit of me that works overtime these days, Jo!
Having ‘lost’ so many photos of my travels over the years, I am happy to be able to recall many such moments in my mind instead.
Best wishes, Pete.
I have a number of occasions that are stored in my mind where I have no images because I was driving, or was too young
