Here’s a spiky, pointy beak, and some super-spiky feet! But I can’t for the life of me remember what this bird is called! It’s in my memory bank from years ago, just need the dratted key!!

I think it is called a ‘Brown Dipper’. The spiky feet are perfect for the challenge. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
Oh? That name doesn’t ring a bell
Not certain, but it has similar spiky feet.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_dipper
I think of it more like a moorhen…from a vague memory….
I’m almost certainly mistaken. 🙂
Well, you tried!
Brown dippers are much smaller – like a thrush.
And it didn’t have the right plumage, to my mind….
No. They are small birds. I have seen them on the River Teme.
OK, I am never sure about birds. 🙂
Feathered or human?
He’s so handsome! 😍🐦 💕 xx
Isn’t he just!!
Oh, those feet look so unnaturally pointy. Nice shot, Sue!
Thanks!!
Could it be a juvenile Moorhen? They have those weird feet. I took some photos of them at Claremont and also Painshill. Becky will know. She’s a birder!
I was wondering about female moorhen, but perhaps juvenile…I’ll ask Becky
He/she is adorable whatever it is! And fabulous spikiness . . .you have clearly read my mind for what I have planned tomorrow
Becky, you’re the birder! Can’t you tell me what it is? I wondered if it was something like a moorhen,,,,
Arrgh you were not meant to remember that!
Not a Moorhen although definitely got fowl features, and definitely not a Brown Dipper. It is almost Rail like but the colours are off.
Where and when did you photograph it?
At Claremont landscape garden in Surrey, 2015
ahh! I take it all back then . . .you are spot on with your first thought. It’s a young Moorhen 🙂
Yay!
That’s where I photographed one. They look very different from when they are in the water! And the juveniles are brown, with a splash of white on the side, like yours if you look closely. Here’s one to compare: https://www.123rf.com/photo_61063475_juvenile-common-moorhen-looking-for-food-in-grass.html
Brilliant, thank you!
Great spikes, Sue. And I certainly can’t help on the identification
Oh, shame! Hopefully someone will know?…
Creative choice, Sue.

Just wish I knew what it was!
I’ll go for Moorhen. Looks quite similar to the Moorhens from here 🙂
Well, opinion is still divided!
I think it’s definitely a juvenile moorhen, Yellow legs really seem to be a thing with water birds. 😃
Another one on the moorhen side! Thanks, Sylvia!
