I vividly recall taking this photograph on Crete around 30 years ago. The heat, the view, the scents of wild herbs…..and looking down into this valley, noticing the tiny chapel and seeing two priests step out and walk up the steps then rapidly disappear down the track. I was slow to grab the camera, only had a ‘nifty 50’ on it, no zoom, so I didn’t get the image I would have liked.
But all these years later, I still think it evokes a real sense of place…. rugged, remote, wild, even…just a chapel and two figures in the visible landscape.
It does, Sue. Pictures and scents – they bring back memories instantly…

That’s how I remember Crete, in 1984. Unbearably hot, and almost deserted, at least away from the coast.
Best wishes, Pete.
We’re on the same page then, Pete
You found a wonderful spot there, Sue, to show the real rugged Crete. Brings back memories for me, from a similar time.
Glad to have triggered memories, Debbie
Wonderful!
Thanks, Tish!
Reminds me of a scene that could be from Mary Stewart’s “My Brother Michael” or one of her novels set in Greece. 🙂
A most happy, healthy 2019 to you, Sue!

Mary Stewart! Years since I read her books…Airs above the Ground was one, I seem to recall…..
Thanks for the good wishes, same for you, Janet !
“Airs Above the Ground” was the first MS I read and loved, as it had to do with horses. I loved her books and her Arthur trilogy is good, too, although Rosemary Sutcliff’s Arthur book is my favorite.
This is a stunner, and as always I enjoy your words. May 2019 create many such memories for you. All my good wishes.
Many thanks, Meg, I wish you a happy, healthy and creative 2019!
I love this one, wonder after all these years if the view is the same 🙂
Who knows? I don’t even know where it was, we were driving about enjoying the rugged countryside!
Oh well I expect is hasn’t changed much anyway 🙂
Very possibly not
It’s just wishful thinking, so much of the world has changed, so I expect you are right.
Photos and memories go together don’t they
Well, I think so, but I do think if one is trying to actively compose an image, to get some sense of the emotion felt at the time, or create a certain type of image, you are laying down a firmer memory than if you just point and shoot……what say you?
I agree, especially if you are thinking of using it in a WP post. but the point and shoot can be memorable too as it would’ve been a certain something that made you take the photo
Well, yes, but I’ve found over the years that the place has been forgotten with those
I’ve never been to Greece or any of the islands, I think I’d like it away from the hoards.
I thought of you last night, did you see the program about Sicily?
I saw it when it was on previously…gives a good flavour of the place, Gilly. You should go, I would love to return….
