Photography challenges to self

Cathy of Wanderessence invites us to create a  post on our photographic intentions, and on a trip to Poland earlier this year I tasked myself with creating images to add to my ‘One’ series, images created using ICM, some silhouettes and some with implied motion.

Before I travelled to the Douro, I knew I wanted more ‘One’s, some street images, some decay and some reflections.

So here are some I came back with, and apologies to those of you who have seen some of these before.

Firstly, images I took in the. Douro for my ‘One’ series. I have already posted these two images shown here, but there are still more to come in the coming days.

Next up, the river gave me plenty of images of reflections. Here are a couple, the first very simple, almost monochrome

…and the second, a wonderful play of light of a limited colour palette at night –

As we cruised along the river, I was taken by the number of decaying buildings we passed. Here are a couple:

Later, when we returned to Porto, and got a small flavour of the place, I noted that there was plenty of decrepitude mixed in with the well maintained:

and general decrepitude:

  1. I like the play of light on the water best, Sue. 🙂 🙂

  2. Sue, I love these intentions, and what you got as a result of being focused on specific subjects. I love that first photo of the man in the shadows, as well as the street car. The reflections are fabulous too, both the monochromatic and the colorful. And you know how I always love decaying buildings. A great set of intentions and photos that resulted from them. Thanks for sharing! I’ll link this post to my Thursday post. 🙂

  3. Wonderful photos Sue.

  4. That first photo is a mistresspiece!

    • Sue

I didn’t like it at the time, but when I converted it to monochrome it was better….but a mistress piece? Not that good. But I do love your words, Meg!

  5. Well, we cannot get enough of these, Sue!

  6. I like your challenges. I need to challenge myself too, but at the moment it is a challenge simply to get out of bed in the morning, I am soooo tired! I just wish I could shake off this horrid bug.

    • Sue

Oh, nooo….sorry to hear that, Jude wWell, when there is no sun, I find myself lying in bed forever – the clock has just struck 9, and I’ve only just got myself out of bed

  7. These are interesting images. I particularly like the loneliness of the first one and the rhythms in the reflections on water.

  8. No need to apologise, if your photos weren’t memorable I wouldn’t remember them!

  9. I enjoyed seeing some again, and the reflections are very nice indeed.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  10. Love the reflections and the last photo had me zooming in with extra curiosity-
The different doors and levels – the people – the colors – etc

  11. I really like the idea of a personal challenge — something I really should adopt. I particularly like the first shot, and the first of the two reflections on water images. The simplicity of that is quite stunning.

  12. What a great collection of images Sue. I particularly like that first reflection, and the old buildings could make an interesting triptych.

  13. Gorgeous! Love these images.

  14. Love the buildings. Everywhere we travel, I’m smitten by architecture — mostly the old and decrepit buildings. In Tennessee, we have lots of old barns which I love. But in Europe and Asia, I like residences both in the country and city. Can’t wait to see what we’ll find in Vietnam and Cambodia.

  15. Beautiful photos! You’re very talented!
