On the Riverbank

A bit of decrepitude spotted on the Douro. I wonder what it was…

  1. I have to guess! From seeing similar contraptions on the Thames in my youth, I am guessing that it was used to load or unload ships, with the product being sent from the point of origin to the hopper via the conveyor belt system. Bags/sacks could be filled by being placed under the hopper, or an additional ramp provided to feed the goods into the cargo area of the ship waiting alongside. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. What a wonderful photo. It looks like one of those shutes on old gold mines.

  3. This is a great photo! Imagine the activity in this area in those days!

  4. Love old machinery. This looks like the sort of thing you see in quarries and fertiliser plants here for loading stuff for transport. Wonder what the product was?

  5. History screaming in silence. Beautiful photo, Sue.

  6. You do find some interesting things Sue!
