How shall I approach this?
In terms of a visual image, monochrome means varying tones of one colour, and Black & White is often referred to as monochrome, or mono.
To illustrate varying tones of one colour, here’s an image I have shown before, but it illustrates varying tones of one colour admirably:

All Blue
Otherwise, in life, things/experiences that are monochrome will be colourless, arid, monotonous, dreary, dull…. Well, here’s an image which, in addition to the fact that it predominantly illustratesvarying tones of brown (even the lone figure is in brown)….the surroundings look rather monotonously dull and dreary:

Solitary in (almost) monochrome
And here’s what we know as a monochrome photograph (and Debbie has shown us some very striking monochrome):
so I think I have covered monochrome!
Linked to One Word Sunday at Debbie’s here
Covered indeed, Sue. Every aspect.
Best wishes, Pete.
Well, I thought I would show willing!
I don’t find the ‘brown’ image as dull at all, it’s a story telling image.
Oh, I agree that it’s a storytelling image, Gilly!
You certainly did a great job covering this challenge. I am struck by the last one, would love to be able to spin a story about it.
Oh, do try!
Excellent!
These are great monochromes, Sue, and the solitary street scene is fascinating despite its lack of colours.
Oh, that street in Zittau was just such a stroke of fortune….right place, right time…..a few moment s later and she would have been gone!
All superb images Sue but I have a fondness for the sea of blue 😃😃 xx
Ah, yes, I might have guessed!
you covered it well. I specially love the bike lady in front of a gallery.
Many thanks, Klara! Yes, I like the lady and her bike, a lucky shot
Yes, you’ve got it covered. I really like the All Blue image.
Many thanks, Amy!

I have never thought of monochrome like this before – love it! Thank you for presenting such a wonderful perspective!
Glad you liked my explanation!!
