Not feeling 100% at the moment, I’ve been trying to rest a bit, and indulged in some daydreaming….
When I was very young, this picture of the Ossiachersee (bought by my parents in Austria in the early 1960s) caught my imagination – I have shown it before.
When I was finally in my teens and on holiday with a friend Interrailling in Europe, I was determined to find the place. We must have travelled by train and post bus, and walked, from Klagenfurt where we were staying.
We got to the lake and pitched our tiny tent. Here was the scene the first evening:
You can see the line of the hills, I’m nearly in the same place as the artist was, decades before – but where’s the dilapidated boat house? A lesson….when you are young, you think you will find a place just as you saw it in a picture….well, I did! And of course nothing stays the same forever, and the boat house may only have been an artistic invention. Hey ho!
i have scanned that slide for the first time this evening, over 3 decades since I took the picture, and am rather pleased with the details, previously unnoticed, in it.
Ah, nostalgia…..
Beautiful photo and rediscovery! Is it possible the artist added the dilapidated boat house to show the lake and mountains are eternal?
Well, maybe!
Nothing like a little dose of nostalgia now and then, and this is a very lovely scene. Hope you’re feeling better soon 🙂
Many thanks, Tish! Glad you like this scene….
Beautiful scene; with and without the boathouse 🙂 Hope you feel better soon.
Many thanks, Su…I think it’s quite tranquil
🙂 — something we probably all need a bit more of.
Indeed!
Hope you feel better. Lovely photo.
Thanks! 😊
What a beautiful place. I love your account of why you were drawn to it and what you found on arrival..
Thanks, Suzanne….glad you like the story!
Hope you’ll feel better soon, Sue. Thank you for sharing your beautiful artwork. Love it. 🙂
Many thanks, Amy!
Sorry you’re below par, hon! I don’t remember your parents picture but it’s lovely, and your scan, though very different came out well. Some things live only in our imagination. 🙂 🙂
Some things certainly live in the memory, Jo…..
Or the imagination
I hope that you feel better soon, Sue.
I have an idea to use your parents’ boat house picture as a short story prompt.
If that’s agreeable with you, I would write it after my current serial is completed, with credit to your site and the picture as inspiration, naturally.
Best wishes, Pete.
Oh, Pete, please do a story! Mind, knowing your dark turns a write can take, I wonder if I’ll ever see the picture the same way!! Hey ho, it’ll be interesting 😊🤔
Thanks, Sue. It will be done once this (very long) serial is over. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
Yay! And I’m enjoying this serial….more than 10 episodes?
I suspect it will be considerably more than ten, Sue. 🙂
Oh, wow!
I’m sorry you’re not feeling well, Sue, and I hope you’ve had a restful day. I love that painting and your view. What a lovely comparison, the painting and the photo. I hope the reminiscence was a pleasure. 🙂
Thanks for your thoughts, Cathy
D’you know, the picture was a ‘Call to Place’, I should have thought of that!
That photo is certainly a call to place. Do you want to elaborate on that and have me link it?
When do I need to have it done by?
I’m posting one on this Thursday morning the 23rd, so it would need to be done by Wednesday the 22nd. Otherwise, you could add the link by August 30 for my September 27 post, or add it yourself when it posts. I won’t be able to add links from 8/31-11/6 because of my upcoming trip. 🙂
OK, I’ll see how organised I am!
Great! I’ll keep my eye out. 🙂
I can see why you’d want to track down that scene, yours is much more lively, and I hope you are feeling so soon.
Thanks for your thoughts, Jude – yes, I want to feel lively again soon! Pleased you like my photograph…..
Both are great images, Sue. The two have a similar feel of calm.
And your fascination for the place reminds me of my one love of Austria, caused by the Chalet School books rather than a painting
I guess we all have triggers that spark travels, and a love for different places!
I’m glad you found this place. It’s beautiful. Hope you feel better soon.
Many thanks, Draco
That is my kind of art Sue, a beautiful picture and maybe the boat house was artistic licence. Photos bring back lovely memories
Photos bring back memories, and much as I would like to be creating new images, on the days and weeks that I can’t get out, go travelling, I can revisit past travels through photographs, and even create different images from them….
Memories are made of such moments. I guess we all carry images from paintings, books and postcards that we hope to see one day….it is what makes us travel when we can, our own discovery adventures. Your image could be mistaken for Derwent Water in the Lake District….very similar 🙂
Yes, I’ve only been once briefly, years ago, but I see what you mean, David
looks like a lovely place, Sue
It is!
The picture is so appealing – and your photo is really excellent with its range of colour tones and the tiny details of people
Get well soon Sue – is it the last gasps of summer wearing you down?
Glad you like this on, Laura…I was quite surprised by the detail in this old transparency. Thanks for the good wishes
Nostalgia is some feeling. Hope you’re feeling better.
Thanks!
Another lovely place Sue, I hope you’re feeling a bit better by now.
I hope I’m coming through the cold, fingers crossed it departs properly soon! Thanks for your thoughts, Gilly 💕
Beautiful scenery. Hope you’re all good now
Oh, fine, thanks!
Great art 🙂
😊
