More on Arlington Row…..

I have been doing some sleuthing, further to posting the monochrome image of Arlington Row, Bibury, taken by my late father in the early ’50s ( I think) https://suejudd.com/2018/08/04/six-word-saturday-in-another-quieter-world-circa-1950/

I have been trying to establish when the Trust acquired Arlington Row, to no avail. In the end, I contacted the Trust, and a very  helpful man found the information and called me back. The date was earlier than I had expected…May 1949.

So….I am left wondering whether that image was taken pre- or post-acquisition. I lean towards post, because it is highly likely if there had been any information in the news, that would have alerted my father to the existence of this place…..he was a great one for finding out about interesting places. It’s where I get it from…

In in the end, I shall never know…..

  1. There have been Postcards published of both the Row and the Swan Bridge by several companies for many years prior to 1949….. Even then part of the tourist trail so maybe your Dad was aware of the location. As you say who knows. All I do know is that NT was far from obvious and I visited from 62 and various intervals for various magazines and travel guides and the Row looked just as it always did, a row of weavers cottages and a mill, all overlooking the water meadows..
