The face of blogging is set to change – tomorrow GPDR is to become law. I have to admit I have been stressing about this, and have been reading as much as I can, most of which seems to be in impenetrable language, but I think I have sussed that as WordPress hosts this site, and I am not running a commercial site, I should be OK with just a few changes…
WordPress created a Cookie widget, to warn people that the site uses cookies…I have added this to my site.
WordPress has a Privacy Statement, and as I can find no way of showing this on my Home Page, I have created a brief Privacy Statement and GPDR compliance entry on the Home page, which has links to the WordPress statement.
Hopefully that will suffice.
I’ll just have another strong black coffee…..Thanks to all of you that have commented and/or followed this blog, you cheer me up, and long may it continue!!

I have to confess that I know nothing about this. I’ve been getting lots of emails from sites I use about privacy but have been so busy I haven’t done anything. Are we supposed to do something on our end? I haven’t heard anything from WP either.
Well, if you look at my site, you’ll see the link to WPs Privacy Policy…but just search WP
I just found the plugin and added it. Glad I did!

Cookie banner is showing up. I don’t think you have anything to worry about Sue. The cookie banner allows a person to read the policy and what the cookies are used for. You do not use the information gathered. You are not the data controller, WordPress is. Unless you are in the habit of sending out newsletters to all your followers yourself, then you can continue to blog as normal.
There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about the GDPR – it is an update on the privacy policies that companies already have in accordance with the Data Protection Act / Directive and nothing to do with the content of a website (some people seem to think this).
Oh, I knew it was to do with the data protection act, but just got in a small stew about it…then I told myself I wasn’t the Data Controller, but wanted to be sure people knew that I wasn’t, and who is…anyway, I’ve calmed down now!!

Having only recently come back into all this & from a country that works on the principle that being polite and sensible about what you post is all that’s needed. I’ve just ignored it, although all the email telling me my privacy is safe, has been a pain and clogged my delete bin.
Maybe it will come home and bite me but I think we don’t need to worry on W/press – it’s a blog not a commercial site.
Well, yes, we aren’t commercial bloggers, but our readers/followers need to be aware of Cookies at the least….
I think on WordPress.com you will be fine Sue. Now on a self hosted site it is a bit of a mush mash as to what all needs to be done.

Thanks for that info. I did not fully understood the sense of GDPR. Its for sure a new source for lawyers for making money. So I’ve set my site on private status, as I did not want the site to become subject of “any and all” jurisdictional dodges…

Well Sue what a nuisance all this policy and privacy business is, they always seem to be changing something. I think I’ll have a glass of wine with Pete and just keep on keeping on and leave WP to sort out the small print. Incidentally I had never heard of this until today when it seems to be popping up everywhere. Hope you are having a good time out and you are keeping well, see you again soon…

Nope, I have a premium site, Sue, but I don’t sell anything to anyone or keep anyone’s details so I really can’t see the problem. 🙂
I don’t sell anything either, or store details, but WP does, when people comment or register, that’s why we need the cookie banner. With a premium site, it probably shows, anyway
Hi Sue, Right now I’m wishing I did not commence reading this post and more the comments 🙂 . Must confess to not taking much notice of emails relating to privacy based on the fact that once we are on the World Wide Web I pretty much think we surrender all our privacy to the sites we visit. As much as I would like to think otherwise! I will have to leave anything for a few weeks I think. This week busy and June posts will be skimpy and irregular.

Well, we are still all here post GPDR day! I haven’t discovered the Cookie widget yet. Last week the inbox went crazy with a flood of emails from long-forgotten sites – things have now quietened down.
