Postcards from my Past / 13 Fairfield Church

For the past week, I have been trying to find an image following a conversation I had with my friend Debs of Travel with Intent

We were looking at photographs in an exhibition, and I said “that’s Fairfield church”, and a check of the title confirmed it….and she always professes to be impressed with my memory!  I promised to find my image of the place, and this is where the trouble started. I was convinced I had scanned the slide in, but a trawl through the archives proved fruitless. Then I searched the section of my slide cabinet  for Kent. Nothing, Nada, Nichts….yikes. I KNEW I had seen it when I was thinning out my possessions when I moved.

Last week, I said to myself “in the grand scheme of things, this is not important”….. but still it bugged me. So this morning, I set to systematically searching the slide cabinet….and after only three sections, I found it! Yippee…misfiled!

To my amazement, it is 30 years almost to the week since I visited the place, after seeing a monochrome image in the late Fay Godwin’s ‘Land’.

So here are two images of St Thomas a Beckett’s church at Fairfield, in it’s remote spot on Romney Marsh, surrounded by water courses and sheep:

Sadly, I never thought to get closer, and see the interior.

  1. a fruitful search Sue – and a church I would love to see before too long. In fact that whole area deserves a visit whilst it is still unspoilt and conjures images of Great Expectations

  2. The second image is amazing. What a roof!

  3. Beautiful, and quite unlike other churches I saw in the UK. Is it a design that seen locally, or as unusual as it seems?

  4. I love Romney Marsh! I almost lived there, a long time ago. You captured it so well, Sue.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  5. Would you believe it? Were you physically at the same exhibition as Debs, or online? And misfiled? Shocking! Think how many other gems may have gone astray 🙂 🙂 Sending hugs to last till you’re back online. Even if you haven’t gone yet. 🙂

Debs and I went to my photo club’s exhibition at the Barbican library…. Mis filing, hopefully not too many more slides! Thanks for the hugs, m’dear, much needed!

  6. I’m in awe of your capacity to find! And what a lovely building-in-a-landscape (with sheep) photo. Especially the second one.

Did you sell a photo (or two) at the exhibition?

    • Sue

I’ve always been a determined little person when it comes to finding places/things!
As to selling any images, no….but I wasn’t holding out any hopes…

  7. Lovely you could ‘re visit’ it in your photo. It’s beautiful.

  8. Glad you found these, Sue.

  11. looks like a nice place, Sue

  12. So glad you found these pix, Sue. The second one is really lovely.
