Monochrome shadows and flowers

It’s a dull day today, so after my walk in the drizzle this morning, and prepping my order for prints and mounts for an upcoming exhibition my photo club has, I need a rest…..

Just sitting here, idly converting my image from yesterday, and here it is, in monochrome. I expect comments to the effect that mono is no good for flowers, and agreed, this lacks ‘punch’, to some degree. But I like the intertwining lines:

  1. I like all the shadows, and the light on the right hand daff’s trumpet, the vase and corner of the mantle piece. Also that is a very sweet pig 🙂

  2. Wonderful in black and white.

  3. I think it works just as well, but in a different way. We have to cast our minds back to the days before colour film became widely affordable, and most people shot everything in black and white.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  4. I’m with Tish. And I think monochrome can work brilliantly with flowers. In this case, it’s the composition and shadows that really draw me.

  5. I disagree completely with your preemptive criticisms! For me it’s not just composition: it’s the gentle calming effect of a limited palette, and the bringing together of all elements.

Ah, what a great comment, Meg! Well, I love mono, so it’s not negative (tee hee) to me, but some images work better in mono than others, and I’m trying to become more adept at choosing, and personally I feel a lot of it is the composition. Are the right elements present to ‘hook’ the vieŵer?

  6. I disagree about mono, some flowers look great in black and white.

  7. So, you must have some ideas of what you’re exhibiting? 🙂 🙂

  8. Oh I love this so much! I love the contrast within the layered textures.
Studying it, I feel the sadness of old, old memories.. the sadness I feel always in the late afternoon when the light is just so. I envy a photo that makes you feel.

  9. I did a bit of Monochrome today. Some setting just need it.

  10. I feel the combination of the shadows has made the monochrome so unusual and beautiful.
    Good Day, Charu.

  11. Monochrome is the best to really show the strength of the composition – no competition from colour. I like this very much.
