What this traveller saw……… in Basilicata

Some more images from past travels – this time, the region of Basilicata in Southern Italy. I was drawn to travelling here when I read Carlo Levi’s book ‘Christ stopped at Eboli’, which describes his time in the impoverished region in the days of Mussolini. Many of the peasants were still living in caves…and still did until the 1950s.

We spent time in the town of Matera, and also travelled to the abandoned village of Craco Vecchia.

  1. The cave houses of Matera have enjoyed a renaissance as a chic tourist destination, Sue, as you may already know. I really enjoyed your photos of this once desolate-looking place.

These are great – so European.

  3. They work beautifully in black and white, Sue. Bygone days 🙂 🙂

  4. Wonderful black and whites Sue. Matera looks wonderful

  5. They do look attractive in B&W, Sue. Hard to imagine living in caves that recently.

  6. These are wonderful Sue – especially the last. Love the B&W

  7. Lovely in B&W – I had never heard of Matera before. Read the link from Pete. Interesting facts.

  8. This non-traveller would like to see it too. A great collection. The Matera shot, first in the collage, is particularly mistressly.

  9. Lovely way to recall those past memories

  10. Matera is a new one for me, love these shots, the B&W is perfect for evoking times gone past.
