Yippee! It’s Traces of the Past for Thursday’s Special.
Today, we are having a glimpse at some ancient Lycean tombs near Fethiye in Turkey. The grander the tomb, the higher the status of the incumbent in society:
Row upon row of apertures within the rock face, where the sarcophagi were placed.
You could get inside this marvellous old tomb, and see the sarcophagus inside, except I was unable to, because of my poor balance. Nonetheless, I felt this was a most imposing sight:

I wouldn’t get inside and not just for my balance. The site looks impressive from outside and you’ve captured it from fascinating angles.
Many thanks, Paula! Glad you like my angles…
How wonderful!
Thank you Paula- it was quite a sight!
Ooops, called you Paula, Anna….sorry!
:)) !
What a cemetery that is. I often think it’s amazing what we build for our ceased families of those close to ur.I love the photo with the flower in the foreground.
Thank you, Otto! It really was quite a sight
Nice tombs indeed, Sue. And well captured.
Best wishes, Pete.
Many thanks, Pete! I would have liked to have got inside, but it was not to be…..
I remember clambering up there but I don’t think we went inside, Sue. That first is a beautiful shot. I don’t remember any blooms about but it was blooming hot! 🙂 🙂
Ah, so we have walked the same paths! Glad you like the first image. I think we went in May, and whilst it was quite warm, it didn’t wipe me out
Our excursions were usually around Spring Bank but I think this was later in the year and before we had James. 🙂 🙂
Oh, Ok….hence the heat
great theme and there are depths of history embedded in these well- defined shots Sue – tombs are too claustrophobic for me!
Fair enough!
Wonderful images Sue of the sort of photography I’m only now just exploring.
Thanks, Adrian! But I recall an abandoned place in Cornwall that you photographed for an RPS Panel…
Stunning images of a stunning place, and you too have a gardener to provide foreground flowers.
Well, I don’t think those flowers were anything but wild, Meg! But they made a good foreground!
Ooo, nice!!
janet
Thank you, Janet!
Just beautiful, Sue. The first one is my favourite.
Good!

This looks like a really unique place. Would love to visit it too! 🙂 I love how you framed the first photo, with the purple flowers in the foreground.
Many thanks, Alex!
I would rather remain on this side of a tomb. Alive or dead makes no difference. But this place is beautiful. Would love to see it one day.
Perhaps you will….
These antiquities never cease to amaze me, I wonder how long our current buildings will stand.
Well, these old Lycean tombs are carved out of rock, for the most part! Our modern buildings aren’t going to last a fraction of the time
I love that door!
Sorry for the late response, Lynne….but yes, the door was great in both senses
Nice and impressive pics ! I enjoyed the contrast between the flower (life) and the carved rock (death). Very powerful !
Thank you, Nicole!
