Yippee! It’s Traces of the Past for Thursday’s Special.
Today, we are having a glimpse at some ancient Lycean tombs near Fethiye in Turkey. The grander the tomb, the higher the status of the incumbent in society:
Row upon row of apertures within the rock face, where the sarcophagi were placed.
You could get inside this marvellous old tomb, and see the sarcophagus inside, except I was unable to, because of my poor balance. Nonetheless, I felt this was a most imposing sight:

What a cemetery that is. I often think it’s amazing what we build for our ceased families of those close to ur.I love the photo with the flower in the foreground.

I remember clambering up there but I don’t think we went inside, Sue. That first is a beautiful shot. I don’t remember any blooms about but it was blooming hot! 🙂 🙂
Ah, so we have walked the same paths! Glad you like the first image. I think we went in May, and whilst it was quite warm, it didn’t wipe me out
Our excursions were usually around Spring Bank but I think this was later in the year and before we had James. 🙂 🙂

I would rather remain on this side of a tomb. Alive or dead makes no difference. But this place is beautiful. Would love to see it one day.

These antiquities never cease to amaze me, I wonder how long our current buildings will stand.
Well, these old Lycean tombs are carved out of rock, for the most part! Our modern buildings aren’t going to last a fraction of the time
