Black & White Sunday – Traces of the Past

This one is a trace of my past, too, in the sense that I took this image 30 years ago when on Crete. I should imagine there is very little left now…

  1. I was also last in Crete more than thirty years ago. It was blisteringly hot, and I never went back.
Nice decaying building though, Sue. Spot-on.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. probably today it looks very different, but I would prefer the old houses, good photo

  3. Love these old good photos…..!

  4. Amazing image, Sue. That house looks very distressed indeed. I don’t think even hubby would take it on as a project. 🙂

  6. I dread to think that there is some posh hotel in its place. I love exploring the past with you, Sue. Thank you.

Glad you like exploring the past with me, Paula…. This was actually a very sad place, one of the buildings on Spinalonga, a former leper colony. I believe it is a protected UNESCO world heritage site.

  7. Very moody and decaying. Reading it was a former leper colony explains the depressing feel I get from the photo.

Beautiful textures and tonal range, Sue.

  9. Ah, I thought it was Spinalonga.
I stayed on the coast opposite there, a place called Plaka – for my honeymoon 30+ years ago. I went back about 15 years ago and Plaka had changed massively – didn’t cross to Spinalonga.
I’ve been to Athens since but would like to get back to Crete some time soon.

  10. It would be interesting to go back and find out.

Memories stored in the pictures are wonderful…

  12. Guess what? I love this image. It expresses age beautifully.

  13. you processed it super.

  14. Those textures seem to be holding many stories.

  15. It’s rather lovely! 🙂 Despite needing a little TLC.

  16. As a historical record it’s even more interesting. Although by itself, it’s such a telling photo, perfect for rendering in black and white.

Yes, it certainly is a candidate for monochrome….something I never considered when I took that particular image (despite the fact that I was a great fan of Ilford FP4 at the time!)

  17. Ahh…you know you’ve got me when you post photos from Crete..and in B&W…and in decay. Love this Sue… and yes, I’m sure it’s all gone by now…

  18. Emilio Pasquale

Beautiful old ruin. I would love to be able to explore around there. Sad to think it probably no longer exists.

  19. Perhaps it is gone, but photos such as this serve as a reminder of the past. Love all the textures.

  20. fabulous Sue!! I never visited Crete though I was on many of the other islands!!

Sadly, I’m sure that this small piece of history is long gone. It’s like looking at the photo of a ghost.
