I was also last in Crete more than thirty years ago. It was blisteringly hot, and I never went back.

It’s part of the Nik software, now owned by Google, and you can get it free…

Glad you like exploring the past with me, Paula…. This was actually a very sad place, one of the buildings on Spinalonga, a former leper colony. I believe it is a protected UNESCO world heritage site.
Very moody and decaying. Reading it was a former leper colony explains the depressing feel I get from the photo.

Ah, I thought it was Spinalonga.
I stayed on the coast opposite there, a place called Plaka – for my honeymoon 30+ years ago. I went back about 15 years ago and Plaka had changed massively – didn’t cross to Spinalonga.
I’ve been to Athens since but would like to get back to Crete some time soon.
Oh, I would love to go back to Crete, but I wouldn’t do it on my own….
Had Plaka changed to a hugely touristy place, high rise hotels and no Greek food??

Well, I do love aging, decrepit buildings!
It would be interesting to go back and find out.
Given that it’s above 30 years, the wood will have gone, and, I imagine, the upper floor…
Memories stored in the pictures are wonderful…

Well that was 30 years ago….goodness knows what’s left….
As a historical record it’s even more interesting. Although by itself, it’s such a telling photo, perfect for rendering in black and white.
Yes, it certainly is a candidate for monochrome….something I never considered when I took that particular image (despite the fact that I was a great fan of Ilford FP4 at the time!)

Ahh…of course! I should have known that, having taken so many photos when I was there, some 5 years ago. Thinking of it, there were still a lot of buildings that looked like the ones in your photo, so maybe more preserved than we first imagined. You’ve got me wanting to look at them again to compare notes!

Beautiful old ruin. I would love to be able to explore around there. Sad to think it probably no longer exists.
