Thursday’s Special: Traces of the Past 03

Another find in the house, tucked at the back of an eaves cupboard, was an old sturdy leather suitcase…..I suspect from the 1950s. It had been to Canada at some point.

Here’s a still-life:

The past in another country....

The past in another country….

oh, and this is my 600th post on this blog!

  1. Congratulations on the 600! And a lovely faded old photo. What an extraordinary find. Any idea who ‘took’ the bathmat?

  2. I was wondering if the motel still existed and thinking you could take it back, but it doesn’t seem to be there even though Portage road is!

  3. Oh this is just brilliant, Sue. It’s making my spine tingle. The untold story…

  4. The old camera case suits the image so well too. Excellent retro feel, in every respect.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  5. Suzanne

Whata wonderful find. Youmust live in an incredible house.

  6. Congrats on your 600th post, Sue. Love your image with the suitcase in the background. 🙂

  7. What unearthings. How much will you keep? Re Tish’s comment: you could make it up! I’m really enjoying your still lifes and the way they both hint at and express times past.

    • Sue

Sadly, I shall keep very little as I won’t have the space. The ammo box and jerrycan have a new home with a friend, this suitcase will have to go, but I shall keep the old trunk, and inside it will be the bibles, letters, cigarette case and little things, the old camera – all so that I can create some future still lifes.
I agree that they hint at the past, one I shall never know about, but express it as tangible remains ….you do express things so well, Meg – I fear that my ability to articulate is disappearing steadily……

  8. Such a wise suitcase to come to Canada! 😉 I feel like I am on a virtual reassure hunt with you in your house Sue. Love the discoveries. Congrats on 600 posts!

A virtual treasure hunt! There’s a thought! Well, the treasures have all been unearthed, so it will be a case of serving up some of the things in new ways in the future, the few that I take with me. Glad you’ve enjoyed them, Sue 🙂

  9. Was there also an ashtray in there with ‘stolen from the New Yorker Motel’ written on it? And congrats – 600!

  10. What a find! 🙂 I like your take on the past, Sue!

  12. Most definitely traces of the past you have found Sue. I look at the drawings on the bathmat they look to be circa 1950’s maybe?

  13. Love the soft colours and vintage feel of this one Sue – fancy stealing a bath mat, mind you the colours are rather gorgeous! 🙂

  14. 600th? Llongyfarchiadau / felicitations / congratulations!

  15. Fabulous artwork from the days of elegant travel. Hope you can find some more treasures.

    • Sue

No more now, Pete, I’ve cleared everywhere. But there will be some revisiting of some pieces in different combinations …. 🙂

  16. Congrats on your 600th post! And this looks like a real treat. A leather suitcase too. Such finds i never do…

    • Sue

I was amazed at some of the stuff I found, and incredible I lived in the house over two decades and didn’t know these treasures wer there…however, that said, I’m glad I’ve found them now, because it has lightened a stressful period…:)
