Well, here we go for Week 4 of the June challenge! The One Four Challenge is hosted by Robyn over at her blog,“Captivate Me”, this is all about processing an image in four different ways over 4 weeks. This month, I am working with another photograph I have taken of two old books found in my loft recently.
For this week, time is short so I’ve done a quick bit of editing. Initially I had a look at some filters in PS Elements, and used a solarisation one, didn’t like the look of that and proceeded to edit this transformation further in an app called Glaze on the ipad..this is the amateur oil painting result:

June week 4
And here’s a gallery of the edits this month:

I think week two…the texture in week 4 is interesting, but the blossoms seem to be less defined. Love old books!!!
Week 2, my personal favourite! 🙂
Created nice texture which added to the “feel” of the books being old
Thanks, Phil 🙂
Wonderful. I loved them all. Thank you dear Sue, love, nia
Thank you, Nia! 🙂
For me it’s a toss up between weeks two and three but I’m leaning towards two. Week 4 obliterates the writing, which I miss.
Completely agree, Emilio – but it was worth seeing how the different approaches changed the dynamic of the image….
This book is a photographic treasure trove Sue. I am really enjoying these images.
Best wishes, Pete.
Thanks, Pete! More treasures to come….
Still week 1 for me! The softer light seems more appropriate to the age of the subject to my eye 🙂
Thanks for your thoughts on this!
🙂
The dignity of the elderly books forces me to select number one, which is more authentic. That one honors the longevity of them.
Interesting, you aren’t alone with that thought! 🙂
Great images and edits Sue. Love June Week 2. 😀
Thank you, Sonel!
Hi Sue, I too prefer week 1 and the gentle edit, in keeping with the age of the book. What a nice image to work on!
These books were a great find – more to come, I think!
Week 2 is hands down my favorite edit of yours. It perfectly captures the mood and the whole vintage feel. I love old books, so having the texture hide the writing was not appealing to me. I love the composition of your photo and I think week 2 highlights that the best!
Thanks for your comments, Kirsten, and glad you like week 2
I love these so much.
Thanks, Francesca! 🙂
Actually I really like this week’s result Sue 🙂
It puts me in mind of the old Dutch Still Life paintings.. I think it’s very effective.
Very hard to choose a favourite as I think they all work in their own way. Perhaps I’m drawn to weeks 2 and 4 the most?
I think you’re very good at Still Life – I know I need to do a huge catchup on your blog 🙂
Thank you, Robyn! I liked week 4 apart from the fact the writing was obscured,,.. And week 2 is my own favourite. 🙂
This has been a great image to work with Sue 😃
🙂
Its a toss up Sue between Week 1 and 2, I love the detail and depending on my mood the darker one and sometimes the lighter one… can I vote for both 🙂
Of course you can, Kaz! And I agree, it can depend on our prevailing mood as to which image we prefer,,…
The texture is really lush in this weeks image. Out of the whole series week two is the strongest image.
Thanks, Ben, my sentiments entirely!
I like version 2 Sue . I wonder how else you might use this lovely antique book , I’m sure you’re not finished yet with ideas even if this challenge is finished !
Oh, I have ideas for it alright, Poppy!
Well, I like the original and so I like week one which just emphasises the text just a little. But I also like the sketched look of week three as I can imagine that as a book illustration. Not sure you can go wrong with this Sue as it is such a beautiful composition in the first place. You arranged your subject(s) well. And the flowers were a touch of genius.
Many thanks for your glowing critique, Jude 😀
I loved all these and so hard to choose. You really grabbed my imagination with this wonderful subject!
Thank you – it certainly seems to have been popular!
I’ve loved this image and all your edits over the month but week 2 is my favourite. I love the sense of age to the books. 🙂
Many thanks, glad .you liked!
You have done so well with all these edits Sue and each one is good. I do like the sketch one, I personally like pencil/ink drawing, and the last one is very different that I like it for your imagination in the process. I wonder if there was any way that an overlay of the writing could be added and the opacity altered so the texture shows through? What a great subject those books are and the edition of that flower is inspirational.
Thank you, Pauline! And I’m sure a text layer could be added on the week 4 one, but not something I have time to work out at the moment…. 🙂
I think I like both the original and week 1’s subtle ‘extra’ aging the best but this week’s one looks like it’s been printed on hand-made paper; the texture is so rich I just want to touch it…
It does look like that, I agree! 🙂
I went for week 1, Sue.
Thanks, Lynne. It’ s interesting how even subtle changes alter the dynamic.
It is and I spend SOME time flipping back and forth between a and b trying to decide when playing with my own images.
🙂
