Some medieval windows

I was in Kent yesterday joining friends for lunch, and also managed to fit in a couple of visits to historic properties. Old manor houses have interesting windows, and at the first place, a medieval Knight’s house, not only were there conventional windows but also defensive embrasures called arrowloops for shooting arrows at intruders…

For more windows this week, visit Dawn’s blog The Day After.

  1. Beautiful and interesting – now I got the answer to certain holes in the wall at St Andrews. They are arrowloops!

A beautiful building steeped in history, Thanks for the slideshow!

  3. What a lovely old place, Sue. Like that second chapel window especially. 🙂

  4. A very interesting series of holes and windows. I like the idea of focusing on on part of a building. Through the photos of the windows one can still tell a lot about the whole building. Very nice, Sue.

  5. Stayed in Kent, near Pluckley recently, in a 16th Century converted grain store. That had tiny ‘arrow-slit’ windows along one wall also. Unsure why, but perhaps they had to defend the grain!
    Best wishes, Pete.
