Weekly Photo Challenge: Room/2

My second entry for this challenge, sparked by an image posted by Tina Schell of one room shacks in Vietnam…..

These are the very eerie ruined Maunsell Forts (WW2 radar listening stations), about 7 miles off the north Kent coast. I went on a boat trip to see them, lucky because the company I went with no longer trade and I’m not sure there are many alternatives. I would love to see inside one, but I don’t think that’s ever going to happen!

Once upon a time these were rooms where people worked. In their heyday, the forts were interconnected by aerial walkways, long since disappeared. More information here.

  1. Fascinating. Kind of Mad Max like in their appeal.

  2. They remind me of War of the Worlds. Great Photo.

  3. Yeah very fascinating – very well captured and perfect for the theme… 🙂

what a great photo. Seeing is believing but I’m still shaking my head – how truly bizarre

  5. What a superb trip out, would love to that.

  6. Wow! Really cool pic and info, Sue. They really look like something out of a science fiction movie. 🙂

  7. I have a very distant shot of one of these from the coast so it is really good to see them up close – as someone else said – War of the Worlds – looks like they are marching towards you with guns swivelling. Excellent ‘rooms’ Sue 🙂

    • Thanks Jude…as you very probably know by now, I love abandoned, desolate etc etc and it was thrilling to be in a boat close to these structures 🙂

  8. I would love to buy one and renovate/convert it into a living space. I think that would be cool.

  9. Fantastic picture….wonderful structures that I had never seen before.

  10. Fascinating, would love to see these, had no idea they existed off the Kent coast…! Great share for the challenge Sue and like you, I’d love to see the inside too 🙂

  11. Very emotive shot, Sue. It ‘stood out’ from your home page 🙂

  12. Sorry- poor choice of words! I think I meant ‘arresting’. I like it, anyway 🙂

  13. Truly fascinating and just like out of a movie! Waterworld.

  14. Wow! Theses are awesome, pity we can’t see inside.
