Frizztext’s A to Z Challenge: I is for Ieud

Frizz has reached the letter ‘I’ on his A to Z challenge…from my travels, the letter I could be for Ightam, Ilfracombe, Isle of Skye, Innsbruck, Ingolstadt…..

But today I shall post Ieud, in Maramures, Romania. Or more specifically, the wooden church there.

The Church of the Nativity of Mary in Ieud is the oldest wooden church in Maramures, first documented in 1365, and is made of fir wood. It is in a very peaceful rural setting, surrounded by rolling hills in the distance. Inside, the wooden churches are decorated with images from the bible, both Old and New testaments, in order to inform the illiterate faithful. These images have become worn and faded over the years, but are quite a sight nonetheless.
I am told that the view from the church tower is stunning, but sadly not possible on the day we were there!

  1. Particularly like the devil and the angel of the Last Judgement holding up their placards like tour guides or drivers awaiting their passengers in the arrivals lounge!

  2. Well you know me and churches – this is a fine example. Kind of reminds me a bit of the Stavkirke of Norway.

  3. Interesting travels, Sue. The interior paintings are quite remarkable.

    • They certainly are, the more so because they have survived so well. Equally impressive are the painted monasteries (which have the exterior walls painted) in the region of Bucovina…another post sometime!

  4. Sue I am so interested in the tombstones that look so different than anything I have ever seen.

  5. hi Sue,
I like your sensible travel diaries from Romania always very much!

  6. Ieud to rhyme with phew, Sue? How strange is language! Love those interior paintings 🙂

What beautiful photos Sue! I got so behind on Frizz…sigh !

  8. What a beautiful church, with its intiguing cemetery! Had never heard of Leud before 🙂

  9. so picturesque! i love the wooden church! so beautiful!

  10. I know this post is old – but churches and stones here in romania are wonderful
