Time for Frizzz’s Challenge again, and more images from my travels. This time, G could have been for Graz, Grindelwald, Grottaferrata, Goslar, Görlitz, Gordes, Grimaud…
But I am choosing Gubbio for this post.
Gubbio is a well-preserved medieval hill town in the Province of Perugia, Umbria, in central Italy, there are plenty of medieval, Gothic, and Renaissance monuments in it’s nicely compact centre. Gubbio has great views over the beautiful surrounding countryside, and over the rooftops of the town itself.
As you look upwards, the Palazzo dei Consoli, a huge 14th century Gothic building, dominates the view:

Inside the Palazzo are an art gallery, an archaeology museum and a civic museum. Here, I saw the amazing Eugubine tablets, which are seven bronze tablets dating from over 2000 years ago, inscribed in the ancient language of Umbria. They had been found by a shepherd in his fields, and as he was illiterate he had no idea how valuable these objects were, and was not adequately rewarded for his find. There were some great views across the rooftops from the top of this building:

Gubbio is known for it’s ceramics, and there are plenty of places selling these brightly painted items:

Ceramics seem to be a very Gubbio thing
There is a rather unique little funicular from the Porta Romana at the bottom of the town, which goes to the Abbey of Sant’ Ubaldo, just above town. You feel as if you are standing in a large birdcage! I’m not good with heights, but it was a fun ride! Some great views to be had.

The Funicular
Hope you enjoyed this snapshot of a place beginning with G. More over at Frizz’s blog here.
Nice shots. I’d go just to ride that funicular. I’ve never seen that before.
Nor had I, so I thought it was an experience worth having!
Love the second one! The wall with the ceramics could well have been taken here in Spain… lots of that about.
I love that sort of local colour….
I always like your amusing intros:

“G could have been for Graz, Grindelwald,
Grottaferrata, Goslar, Görlitz, Gordes, Grimaud…”
P.S.: I’ve been in Greenland:
Thanks Frizz…glad they’re amusing. But when we come to the awkward letters like G and X, I shall only have one place that I’ve visited!! PS I’ve never been to Greenland!
Ahh, I don’t know if I could have done that funicular …
It actually wasn’t as scary as I thought….
Bird on a wire 🙂
“…to be free”
A beautiful post but the Funicular photo is making me dizzy. 😉 I’m glad you enjoyed the ride!
Thanks! Heights make me wobbly, but it was an entrancing view, and only a short ride….
looks like this town is tucked in rolling hills. must be a pretty sight up there. i’m not fond of heights either but your ride looks like fun!
Gubbio is in Umbria, in the Appenines. Very pretty sight…
Love the birdcages 🙂
A bit of a different way to get up a hill!!
And I love the ceramics! 🙂
Bright and cheerful!
Brilliant Blog
Thanks!
