For this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge, Sarah Rosso at WordPress has tasked us to come up with images to do with ‘layers’. I thought for all of one minute…
I am posting an image from recen travels of the very atmospheric town of Matera, in Basilicata, Italy. If you look over to the town from the opposite side of the ravine, you see the rock upon which it is built, layers of the old town which includes the cave dwellings, and higher still is the modern town, then the trees, and finally the sky. Layer upon layer!
I also think it demonstrates different colours and tones in the layers and equally, different textures..
This particular image is courtesy of my friend Sarah, as I had avoided getting the modern part of the town in any of my images! I have given it a tiny bit of a boost using HDR Efex Pro to emphasise the layers a little more.

Amazing work all over !
Thanks very much, appreciate your comment 🙂

This is so layery I am feeling intimidated.
So layery… Love that word (never mind that it’s not in my dictionary!) and why would you feel intimidated, Mrs C?
What a beautiful place!
It is incredibly fascinating, but I don’t think I would say it’s beautiful… but perhaps it looks so from this image. Thanks for the comment. 🙂

It’s a beautiful pictures. I like the contrast between the old town and the modern part in the background as well as the trailing light from the side.
Thanks, Otto, we obviously went at a good time of day to get the side light…

My mind worked along similar lines with this challenge but I haven’t posted anything. I like the photo you have chosen to convey the notion of layers of history.
Thanks, Suzanne. I like the idea that someone else was thinking along the same lines, glad you like the image. My friend will be chuffed to bits when I tell her that her photo has had some great comments! 🙂
I would love to visit Basilicata and the town of Matera. What an experience that must have been. Wonderful! Thank you for sharing and rekindling my desire to see it 🙂
Go see! You’ll love it… And there are one or two shots in earlier posts – there will be more…
Wonderful, I shall look out for them 🙂
Lots of lovely layers Sue – the boost works very well.
Jude xx
Thanks Jude, my friend will be chuffed to bits that her photo got so many comments! I had taken shots from the same vantage point, but avoiding the modern part of town. But that modern bit was essential to really make the point of the layers! Hey ho! 🙂
Ha, that happens to me too – I usually look in my OH’s shots to see if he took what I missed 🙂
Wonderful capture. Love the ancient, old, modern layers – really terrific!
It’s an incredible place to see!
Cheers, Sarah! Thanks for sharing 🙂
This is really interesting – and very beautiful. I think this is one of few featuring old and new. Great.
Glad I’ve thought outside the box for this one as well! It has to be all downhill from now….
Ha, ha – I don’t think so…you are a brainy woman.

Terrific choice for the challenge. This is exactly the kind of image I lhoped to find in my archives! Great processing too Sue.
Well, I like to think around a subject – glad you liked my choice!
Oh Matera… i love Matera and the south of Italy. Nice capture!
Thanks! Matera is the most amazing place – I hope to get back there one day, 🙂
